Khakassky Zapovednik, the only federal protected area in Khakassia, represents the typical features of the steppe plains and mountains of the region. It includes plentiful lakes and a multitude of ‘kurgans’- burial mounds of the tribal chiefs and princesses who were often buried in these mounds with their horses and treasures of gold obtained from trading. Many of the kurgans can still be marveled at today.
is made up by a system of nine separate territorial units representing some of the most valuable and biologically diverse ecosystems of the entire republic. All nine units can be divided into two main groups, being either in the steppe zone of the Khakassian-Minusinsk Valley or in the high mountain zone of the Abakan Ridge. Nevertheless, each unit is a unique place with a rich diversity of landscape forms and an abundance of wildlife, each fascinating in its own way.
