Altaisky Zapovednik, a specially protected natural area, preserves a very precious and unique part of the North-eastern and Central Altai - a complex system of mountain ridges and valleys. The protected area, approximately 250 km long and 40 km wide, is characterized by high diversity of landscape forms and ecosystems, including lush alpine meadows, mountain tundra and small glaciers. The zapovednik is one of the largest and oldest nature reserves in Russia, one of the few remaining places kept undisturbed by human activities. Since 1998 it is duly inscribed as the World Natural Heritage site by UNESCO under the title ‘Golden Mountains of Altai’.
Altaisky Zapovednik is a true Russian lakeland with 2560 medium-sized and small shallow lakes. The largest one isLake Teletskoye, which is 80 km long and 5 km wide, and has an area of 230.8 km2. It ranks it as the sixth deepest lake in the world with the maximum depth of 325 m. As a result of the distance from human settlements the mountain lakes of Altai contain enormous pure freshwater reserves. Lake Teletskoye alone contains more than 40,000 m2 of highly pure water. The picturesque Altaisky Zapovednik offers extraordinary outdoor experience for all.
