Siberia is a great place for ecotourism. This website has been developed to raise awareness about the natural and cultural heritage of Central Siberia, in particular its network of protected areas and cultural monuments, and to promote appreciation of the region through sustainable travel and genuine ecotourism enhancing conservation of biodiversity and ensuring sustainable livelihoods of local communities. The website is integral part of a broader project: ‘Enhancing biodiversity conservation and ecotourism in Russia’, which provided direct support to Russian protected areas in developing best practice in conservation and ecotourism. The project, implemented in Central Siberia as its pilot region, was developed within the PECE (Partners for Environmental Co-operation in Europe) Initiative co-financed by DEFRA (UK). It was carried out by Fieldfare International Ecological Development Plc from the UK and its Russian partners Environmental Education Centre Zapovedniks, Ecotourism Development Fund Dersu Uzala and Association of Ecotourism of Russia.
We would like to thank all the staff of protected areas and cultural institutions in Central Siberia which took part in the project and provided up-to-date information for the website. Special thanks to Vladimir and Alexander Lotov, Vladimir Gorbatovski, and Svetlana Shigreva, Tatiana Kondratenko, Elena Kim and Svetlana Belova for additional efforts in the development of the website. We are grateful to Annika Weseloh and Valentin Espert for help with translation of texts into German, and Paul Goriup and Jeannot Attard for proof-reading the English texts. Last but not least we would like to thank the company GreenDesign from St. Petersburg for designing the website.
